Buying Gas In Baja
Last week I spent a little over $80 to fill my gas tank at Costco, which is usually one of the most cost effective options here in San Diego. That is far and away the most money I have ever spent on a tank of gas. At risk of dating myself, I remember when gas was 85 cents a gallon, and you could give the cashier a $20 bill and expect change after filling up. Boy times have changed!
When I drove down to Baja yesterday, I decided to get gas at the Rosarito Pemex since it is just over half the price. I spent 500 pesos – just over $50 – for a full tank, and since gas stations in Baja are full-service, I got clean windows to boot!
It was recently reported in the local media that more and more Americans were crossing the border to take advantage of the cheaper gas offered by Pemex. Some critics said that there is no real savings because of the time involved to get back across the border, and the need to buy a single day Mexican insurance policy. While that scenario is probably true, for those people with a SENTRI Pass and an existing six-month or annual Mexican insurance policy, this is a great option to save a considerable amount of money to fill your tank.
