Erendira Baseball Weekend
August 25, 2009 – 4:40 pm
The annual baseball weekend in Erendira was yet again a fantastic time. We headed south in the afternoon on Thursday July 30th. The drive went really well except for the detour just south of Maneadero, which was a little slow because of the dirt road…the trucks in front of us had to take it easy. We arrived just before dark and got settled in at our friends casa where we were staying. Friday morning we got up early and took two pangas out of Castros Camp to do some fishing. We trolled on the way out and landed a bunch of bonito…who were pretty fun to bring in. Once we got a ways out we did some bottom fishing and brought up mostly rock cod which were going to be used for fish tacos at the post-game fiesta on Saturday night. It was a really be
beautiful day to be out on the ocean. As the day went on it seemed like the small northwest swell was building…so we were hoping to get some surf in the afternoon. Once we got back into town we headed north of town to check the beachbreak. Unfortunately, the swell really wasn’t doing it and there were only a handful of waves to be had. It was not great, but the water was just barely warm enough for trunks and made for a quick refreshing surf. That night we had fish tacos from town and and enjoyed the rest of the evening in front of the fire pit. Saturday morning the surf had still not really materialized, so after a quick surf we headed into town for the baseball game. The Monos played really well, but apparently the local team, Los Indios, were fired up and
looking to come away with a win after losing last year. The game was tied up until the very end, when Los Indios blasted a few hits and drove in two runs, emerging victorious. After some down time in the afternoon a bunch of us headed to the south end of town to check a little beachbreak that we had heard about. Along the way I managed to drive through a seemingly innocent mud puddle and was shocked when a wall of muddy water completely covered my 4Runner. It was great! The surf had bumped up a bit in size and was the best we had seen it all weekend. That said, it was pretty dumpy and breaking really close to shore. Still, there were a few corners to be found and we all picked off some fun ones. Aterwards we headed back north to check out the blowhole that we passed on the way down to surf. This blowhole was pretty unique in that it was set back pretty far from the water. When a sizable swell hit the shoreline there would be a about a 15 second delay before it would blast off and send spray 30 or so feet into the air. Pretty cool. Then we headed to the fiesta at Estebans house in Malibu Sur. The fiesta was great and had all of the necessary elements- fresh carne asada, ceviche, guacamole, cold beer, music, great company, a poker game, washer chunkin and puppies. Yes, puppies. Apparently the neighbors dog had a litter of puppies about 10 weeks back and were looking
for people to take them back to the U.S. My fiance works at the Humane Society and really wanted to bring a puppy back to foster it until we could find it a home. He was a super cute pooch that was given the name “Mono” in honor of the baseball team, and I couldn’t say no. The poker game lasted well into the night, then we returned back to the casa and fell asleep. On Sunday we awoke to another beautiful day in Erendira. Unfortunately it was time to start packing up and head towards the border. We loaded the car and headed out of town around one. As we passed through Ensenada we made the requisite stop at El Trailero to get a carne asada fix. They never disappoint! I put away four tacos and washed it down with a Coke. Mono slept in the back seat for almost the entire drive back up to the border. For how young he was, he really did well in the car and never really made a fuss about anything. We got up to the border and there was a little bit of a wait, but nothing bad. We got up to the agent and her first question was “What the heck happened to your truck?” as it was completely covered in red mud. I told her about the giant puddle and then also explained that we were bringing back a puppy from Baja. She asked if he had his shots yet, and we responded that he did not, but
would be getting them in the upcoming week. She checked him out for about 10 seconds and then waved us through. Sweet! It was yet another great trip down to Erendira made even better when we adopted out Mono to a very nice family last weekend. The only bad part is having to wait an entire year for the Monos baseball weekend to happen again!

Erendira, one of my favorite little towns. Wish I could live there.
