On the final day of the 28 day waiting period, the waves and favorable weather finally aligned and the Todos Santos Big Wave Event went off in giant surf this past Sunday. 24 elite big wave surfers from around the world came to compete, with Hawaiian Mark Healey taking top honors. The unique thing about this contest is that there was no prize money on the line. After the title sponsor backed out, essentially crushing the event budget, contest organizer Gary Linden decided to run the contest anyway. It became a a grassroots event, with the event staff basically volunteering their time to put the contest on and the surfers competing for nothing more than pride and their passion for big wave surfing. In the end, it was an amazing day of big wave surfing and one of the best events Baja has seen in years. Baja Bound was honored to be the official Mexican auto insurance sponsor of the contest, and provided insurance for the contest organizers and staff. We also got the opportunity to go out on a boat for the contest and witness the action from the safety of the channel, which was absolutely amazing! Below is a great video that highlights some of the world class surfing that took place.
