NORRA Mexican 1000 Baja Road Trip – Day 1

The NORRA Mexican 1000 was an amazing event full of history, nostalgia and lots of racing action! The three day stage rally went from Mexicali to La Paz, making stops in Bahia de los Angeles and Loreto on the way down. Vehicles had to be from 1989 or older in order to compete, so the collection of vintage vehicles was impressive. Baja Bound was honored to be the official Mexican insurance sponsor for the event, as well as the Mexican insurance provider for Mag 7, the official pit crew for NORRA. Geoff from Baja Bound was also joining Mag 7 to work in the San Juanico pit on day two of the rally, and joined their caravan headed south. Day one – Wednesday, April 28th – was the technical inspection of all the vehicles, and kicked off in Mexicali at Hotel Colonial. Here are some photo highlights…

Many of the cars displayed original logos from past events.

The Meyers “Off The Road Tow’d”
The Mag 7 caravan departed Mexicali mid-day and started heading south, with our planned destination for the night being Gonzaga Bay. The new road south of Puertecitos was really nice and the views of the Sea of Cortez were stunning. However, the road ended rather abruptly and we were on the dirt for the rest of the drive to Gonzaga. A few of the vehicles in our caravan had large trailers, so the going was slow on the dirt, but the scenery was great. One flat tire later we rolled into Alfonsina’s for the night and got to sleep .
