NORRA Mexican 1000 Baja Road Trip – Day 3

May 11, 2010 - 5:05 pm

On day 3 we woke up early and headed for San Juanico. The road was much easier to negotiate with daylight on our side, and the rigged leaf spring was holding up pretty well so far.

Almost there!

We finally arrived in San Juanico at around 9:30 am and got to our pit location. The first cars would be coming through in about four hours, so we scrambled to offload the trailer, set up the pit and get the fuel prepped for distribution. Unfortunately, we got so busy at the pit that we did not get any good photos of the cars, but there is some good video footage that is being put together and will be posted soon. It was amazing to see some of the cars that had made it this far in the race considering how rough some of the course was.

Towards the end of the afternoon we received word that car 28 driven by Bob and Barrett Howle had blown their motor and were stranded about thirty miles north of our pit. Thankfully, some locals were able to tow them into town so they would not have to sleep out in the middle of the desert. Even though it was almost May, and we were in Baja Sur, daytime temperatures were only in the high 60′s, the wind was still howling and it got really cold at night. They would have been miserable out there.

Instead of camping, we all decided to get rooms at Hotel 7 Puntas in San Juanico, which overlooked first point. The rooms only cost 300 pesos and hot showers were sounding pretty good at this point. After two days of camping in the cold wind and then a full day of working in the pit, we needed it! After getting cleaned up, we made our way over to one of the local taco stands and had dinner. Knowing we had a couple more long days of driving ahead of us, we turned in early.
